The thirteen contributions gathered in this volume explore how bankers and banks were involved in the political, economic and cultural life of Europe. They focus on the geographical and socio-political characteristics and regional experiences of the Northeast European regions. Case studies close to the source will highlight the dynamic development and international dimension of banking as well as the strategies and instruments of self-representation of bankers and banks. They are stories of political and social integration, but also of conflict. Thus, the studies, which cover a wide range of topics from the early modern period to the Cold War of the 20th century, repeatedly stimulate cross-references and new perspectives.

Dr. Aleksandra Lipińska is professor for art history of the early modern period at the Institute of Art History of the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich. Within the framework of her research focus on Eastern Central Europe and the Netherlands, she is particularly interested in processes of cultural transfer and the roles of the actors involved.

PD Dr. Agnieszka Pufelska is a research associate at the Nordost-Institut e. V. at the University of Hamburg (Lüneburg) with a focus on German-Polish relations, Jewish cultural history and the history of material cultural assets in Eastern Europe.

PD Dr. David Feest is a research assistant at the Nordost-Institut e. V. at the University of Hamburg (Lüneburg). His research focuses on the history of the Baltic Sea provinces and republics, the history of the Soviet Union and the history of Russia.
