Marfa von Sacher-Masoch remembers her childhood as the daughter of the writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch and his second wife, the teacher Hulda Meister.
Marfa and her siblings Olga and Ramón grow up on an idyllic estate in Hessen (Germany). The parents use the natural curiosity of their three children to teach and educate them as if by chance. They experience a comprehensive education that does not require a cane at all.

With this vivid account of a reform education, the author also paints a completely new picture of her famous father. She describes Leopold von Sacher-Masoch as a caring father and loving husband, thus revealing an unknown side of the author, who until now has been identified primarily with his scandalous texts.

Marfa Saternus, née von Sacher-Masoch, (*1887 †1963), pseudonym M. Coray, was the youngest daughter of the writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (*1836 †1895) and his second wife Hulda Meister (†1918). She wrote her first novel at the age of 13. Later she earned her living by writing for the feuilleton and women’s pages and, from 1932, with her novels. In 1919 she married Arthur Saternus (*1892 †1970), who, among other things, worked as an editor for the Vorwärts. From 1934 to 1948, she, her husband and her daughter lived in Hungary, where the author began her work on Die drei Kinder im Herrengarten.

 

Dr. Marion Kobelt-Groch (*1955 †2018) studied Pre- and Early History, Educational Science, German Studies and History at the University of Hamburg from 1976 to 1990. In 1990 she received her doctorate under Hans-Jürgen Goertz on “Women in the Peasants’ War and in the Anabaptist Movements”. Since then, Kobelt-Groch has taught as a private lecturer at the University of Hamburg. Her work focused on the Radical Reformation, women’s and gender history, printed Lutheran funeral sermons from the 16th to 18th centuries and Leopold von Sacher-Masoch.
