This interdisciplinary and international conference volume is concerned with travel and mobility in history from ancient seafarers to medieval travelling scholars and the Age of Discovery until the present day. It focuses on material sources of journeys, anthropological aspects of travel experiences like the perception of space, the image of “the other” or moments of reflection, and on forms of fixation of travel experiences in various media like accounts of scientific expeditions, travelogues, novels, and poems.
It contains papers from the international interdisciplinary conference founded by the Alexander von Humboldt foundation in St. Petersburg in April 2013.
