Kriegsberichterstatter in den deutschen Kolonialkriegen in Asien und Afrika.
[War Correspondents in the German Colonial Wars in Asia and Africa: Eyewitnesses, Instigators, Accomplices?]
During the German Colonial Wars in Asia and Africa in the very first years of the 20th century, German Newspapers sent eleven journalists to report from the battlegrounds. Merle Zeigerer is the first to put the focus on those war correspondents who reported from China, German South-West-Africa, and German East Africa. She looks into the media systems, the transnational spaces, and structures the journalists found themselves entangled in both at home, on their journey abroad, and on the spot. She also analyses the discourses of violence they conveyed in their articles, massively shaping the way their readers thought about the war and the conduct of war by the German Army. Zeigerer shows how those eleven journalists became political players who interpreted the realities on the battlefields in their own way, thereby acting as potential competitors to the official versions communicated by the government and the army.
Zeigerers study is located at the crossroads between the history of colonialism, violence, and media.
