Katharina Abermeth has written the first academic biography of the colonial civil servant and governor of German East Africa Heinrich Schnee (1871–1949). She for the first time used the extensive Nachlass of Schnee as well as other sources from 17 international archives. She chronologically follows the life and career of Heinrich Schnee: His time as judge in the Bismarck Archipelago and as colonial civil servant on Samoa, his career in the Imperial Colonial Office in Berlin, as well as the years as governor of German East Africa during the First World War which constituted the peak of his career. Katharina Abermeth analyzes the political style of Schnee, his dealings with the indigenous population, and his professional networks. She sheds light on the leeway German colonial civil servants had both in the colonies and in Germany.
