Johann von Hoya

Quid hic peccaverat?

Klagebrief Graf Johanns von Hoya, Bischof von Osnabrück, an König Erik XIV. Wasa

Translated from Latin into German by Juliane Böcker-Storch. With a portrayal of the times by Hartmut Bösche.

Johann von Hoya (1529-1574), Bishop of Osnabrück and Münster, Administrator of Paderborn, was the last important representative of the House of Hoya. In previous biographies, his youth and his connection with the Swedish royal house have always remained unclear. Research in the archives of northern Germany, in Stockholm, Tallinn, Copenhagen and London has opened up new perspectives. A long Latin letter from John to his Swedish relatives discovered in the process reveals unexpected traits of the Prince of the Church. Juliane Böcker-Storch has transcribed and translated this letter. Hartmut Bösche sketched the environment of the persons concerned.

Juliane Böcker-Storch taught Greek, Latin, German and ethics after studying classical philology and German studies. She published a methodological guide for translating according to the extended gradatim method (Sallust, 1st speech against Catilina and Ovid, Four Ages Myth). Since her retirement, she has volunteered at the Domgymnasium Verden to catalogue the school archives and the historical library.

Hartmut Bösche taught in Bremen after completing his studies. He has published numerous works on the regional history of the central Weser region. Since 2013, he has been working as a volunteer for the historical library of the Domgymnasium Verden. Among other things, he restored the book collection of the Verden historian Christoph Gottlieb Pfannkuche. In “Holste und Hoya”, he worked on the history of the Reformation in the Middle Weser region. He also reconstructed the library of the defunct Heiligenberg monastery in “Von Wernigerode nach Heiligenberg”.
